About the DVLA

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA), is the agency responsible for maintaining the database of drivers and vehicles in Mainland Britain.

The DVLA is based in Swansea and is the body responsible for issuing motor vehicle registrations and setting out regulations for personalised number plates and Cherished number plates.

In Northern Ireland, DVLA equivalent functions are served by Driver and Vehicle Licensing Northern Ireland (DVLNI), who have responsibility for Irish number plates.
